But right now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsenergybusiness.com\/analysis\/how-stem-education-can-fill-widening-skills-gap-in-uk\/\"><strong>the UK is facing a shortfall of more than 173,000 STEM workers<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 a gap already being felt across the infrastructure sector. Nearly half of engineering and technology businesses are struggling to recruit, with the shortage estimated to cost the UK economy around <a href=\"https:\/\/post.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/post-pn-0746\/#:~:text=The%20UK%20STEM%20sector%20is%20considered%20important%20by,report%20difficulties%20with%20recruitment%20because%20of%20skills%20shortages.\">\u00a31.5 billion<\/a> each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this episode, host Toby Sadler is joined by Paul Cox (CEO, Energy &amp; Utility Skills), Steph O\u2019Donnell (HR Strategic Workforce Planning Manager, SSEN Transmission) and Karen Armstrong-Telfer (Nuclear Practice Lead, Energy and Environment, ArchTam) to explore what it will take to close the gap \u2013 and how the sector can attract, develop and retain the talent it needs to deliver on its ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/6853c5db99b009dcdcb73649\/UK_Infrastructure_A_10_Year_Strategy_Web_Accessible.pdf\">10-year Infrastructure Strategy<\/a> is doubling down on clean energy and major infrastructure investment, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energyvoice.com\/insights\/energy-opinion\/575138\/the-great-new-british-nuclear-opportunity\/\">\u00a317.8 billion commitment to new nuclear energy projects<\/a>, alongside wider plans for offshore wind, grid upgrades and transport.
