The work undertaken through the framework will support EirGrid in planning, developing and delivering resilient and secure transmission network infrastructure across the island of Ireland, as it seeks to prepare the grid to carry 80% of both the Ireland and Northern Ireland’s electricity from renewable sources in line with government targets.

To achieve their respective Net Zero targets, collectively Ireland and Northern Ireland require the development of an additional 19 GW of electricity from renewable energy sources – roughly three times what is currently available. These new sources, potentially located in remote locations, will need to be connected to the grid so the new power generated can be delivered across the island of Ireland – requiring significant development of the island’s transmission network.

The Framework for Grid Development will run for five years from November, with the option of a three-year extension. ArchTam has been appointed to support EirGrid across all services on the framework.

Eloise John, Director of Energy at ArchTam UK and Ireland, said: “At ArchTam, we welcome the opportunity to bring together our multidisciplinary design and planning expertise to support EirGrid’s sustainable and low-carbon energy vision. The local knowledge and technical capability provided by our Ireland team, combined with ArchTam’s global expertise, will prove particularly invaluable in delivering reliable, efficient and future-ready transmission network infrastructure. This work will help ensure Ireland and Northern Ireland’s grid network can meet the challenge of their ambitious renewable energy plans, helping the entire island achieve its Net Zero targets.”

ArchTam has been working with EirGrid on specialist consultancy frameworks since 2013, the latest of which being the Framework for Grid Development.

About ArchTam

ArchTam is the global infrastructure leader, committed to delivering a better world.
