{"id":38593,"date":"2023-10-13T13:16:32","date_gmt":"2023-10-13T13:16:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/?post_type=project&#038;p=38593"},"modified":"2023-10-18T07:51:40","modified_gmt":"2023-10-18T11:51:40","slug":"remediation-of-a-lindane-landfill","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/projects\/remediation-of-a-lindane-landfill\/","title":{"rendered":"Conducting the remediation of a lindane landfill in Bailin, Spain"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"aecom-custom-block block-intro-text\" style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 40px\">\n    <p class=\"editor-emphasized\">\n        Our remediation work in Bail\u00edn is mitigating hydrological damage, improving water quality and restoring the environment for future generations.      <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The pesticide lindane was widely produced globally during the second half of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century. But due its toxicity, it has now been prohibited or restricted in most European countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bail\u00edn is one of three sites in Aragon \u2013 a province in north-eastern Spain \u2013 that has been heavily contaminated by lindane production. This has polluted both the local soil and groundwater.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cleaning up these contaminants across Bail\u00edn\u2019s complex fractured geological landscape poses a significant and long-term challenge.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Appointed in 2008 by the regional government under a \u20ac10 million EU-funded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciencia.gob.es\/en\/Estrategias-y-Planes\/Fondo-Europeo-de-Desarrollo-Regional-FEDER.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.ciencia.gob.es\/en\/Estrategias-y-Planes\/Fondo-Europeo-de-Desarrollo-Regional-FEDER.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FEDER<\/a> programme, our specialists are conducting the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/services\/environmental-services\/remediation-restoration-redevelopment\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/services\/environmental-services\/remediation-restoration-redevelopment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">remediation<\/a> of lindane-contaminated groundwater at the legacy landfill at Bail\u00edn-Aragon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help us achieve this, we are actively collaborating with research institutions (Gaiker) and universities (Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Barcelona).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assessing groundwater contamination&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our first task was to develop a conceptual site model (CSM). A critical stage of any remediation project, this presents a comprehensive picture of the site and identifies potential risks to the environment and human health.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CSM was also pivotal in helping the team select the best remediation technique to test and apply \u2013 including those that use nature-based solutions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Harnessing tools and technologies such as passive flux meters, groundwater modelling and passive soil gas surveys, we gained a deeper insight into the behaviour and migration of the contaminants. This enabled project engineers to target treatment areas more precisely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A significant part of this project was delivered using remote monitoring technology which allows us to capture real-time data from across the site. By limiting in-person visits, we\u2019re not only protecting employees but also helping lower carbon emissions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Land contamination is a socially and politically delicate subject. But through sharing our results with stakeholders and the wider public, we have ensured that the local community is kept well informed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Designing an effective remediation strategy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our ongoing work at Bail\u00edn has been instrumental in helping the client design an investigation and remediation strategy that can be rolled out to other sites and applied to different contaminants.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once complete, this project will significantly improve water quality at Bail\u00edn \u2013 protecting public health and restoring the environment for future generations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":771,"featured_media":38595,"template":"","tags":[],"city":[],"class_list":["post-38593","project","type-project","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/project\/38593","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/project"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/project"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/771"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/project\/38593\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":38594,"href":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/project\/38593\/revisions\/38594"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/38595"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=38593"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=38593"},{"taxonomy":"city","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/city?post=38593"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
