{"id":39513,"date":"2024-01-30T09:36:42","date_gmt":"2024-01-30T09:36:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/content\/?post_type=project&#038;p=114637"},"modified":"2024-01-30T04:39:53","modified_gmt":"2024-01-30T09:39:53","slug":"supporting-the-expansion-of-sigonella-naval-air-station","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/projects\/supporting-the-expansion-of-sigonella-naval-air-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Supporting the expansion of Sigonella Naval Air Station"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"aecom-custom-block block-intro-text\" style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 40px\">\n    <p class=\"editor-emphasized\">\n        Find out how our expertise steered the expansion of a naval air base in Sigonella, Italy.     <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Situated in eastern Sicily \u2013 the Mediterranean\u2019s largest island \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/cnreurafcent.cnic.navy.mil\/Installations\/NAS-Sigonella\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sigonella Naval Air Station<\/a> is the main operating base for NATO&#8217;s Alliance Ground Surveillance Force (NAGSF).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as hosting the U.S. Navy\u2019s second largest security command, it is also one of the most frequently used stops for U.S. aircraft bound from North America to Southwest Asia and the Indian Ocean.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In July 2018, a major project began to expand the air base. This involved constructing two areas of approximately 70,000 square metres each: a land-side operations area and an air-side area with hangars and a runway for remotely piloted aircraft.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were appointed by NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) as Quality Assurance Engineers and Site Inspectors for the project. Our role involved providing ongoing support throughout the work\u2019s management \u2013 from health and safety coordination to testing during construction.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What was ArchTam\u2019s role in the expansion of Sigonella Naval Air Station?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This project, developed according to Minimum Military Requirement (MMR) standards, involved the construction of several facilities. These include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Four hangars for the cleaning and maintenance of five Global Hawk aircraft&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Logistics and support buildings (warehouses, buildings for the shelter of&nbsp;NATO ISR Forcewheeled&nbsp;vehicles, electrical substations and water treatment plant)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Buildings for office use and secured buildings for remote controlling of the aircraft&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The works also comprised all the necessary infrastructure, including subservices, roads, and apron. Additionally, to guarantee the specified Class I and II NATO security across facilities, complex security systems were installed throughout.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our role on this project included verifying documents, ensuring they were complete, technically accurate and compliant with the contractual documents before their submission to NSPA; reviewing construction drawings produced by the contractor and preparing design review reports; and assessing the quality control of the construction works. We also acted as health and safety coordinator and building tester \u2013 both of which are statutory roles for construction projects in Italy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mitigating risks and ensuring environmental sustainability&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mitigating climate risks and increasing sustainability were important considerations in this project. In December 2005, the Sigonella base was hit by a major flood, which resulted in the evacuation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/475-families-evacuated-after-storm-floods-sigonella-housing-complex-1.42536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more than 400<\/a> service members and families. Consequently, there was a need to address this in the design to ensure resilience against future floods and major weather events.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drawing on our expertise, we advised on measures to ensure the long-term sustainability of the new infrastructure. As well as advanced management of rainwater and wastewater, these measures included using environmentally sustainable recycled materials and installing 600 photovoltaic panels, which generate clean energy by converting sunlight into electricity.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/NSPA_AGS-MOB-SIGONELLA_17-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"Sigonella naval air station\" class=\"wp-image-114654\" \/><figcaption>Construction of the Sigonella naval air station.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Greener, more efficient infrastructure&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to our technical excellence, we provided added quality and risk mitigation to the project during the construction phase.
