Our client’s strategic vision was to expand port facilities to accept the largest container vessels operating on global trade routes.

With the addition of the third container terminal, the port has quadrupled the capacity of the vessels it can accommodate, increasing to a capacity of 22,000 TEU ships from the 5,000 TEU ships of the original port, enabling the port of Tema to become the transshipment hub of West Africa.

The development will leave a legacy. It is providing substantial economic benefits for Ghana via enhanced trade opportunities, increased revenues to the state through taxes, levies and fees and job creation (during construction and operation). With over 90 per cent of the 4000 people working on the project being Ghanaians, the scheme has also enabled upskilling of the local workforce, via exposure to international construction standards and HSE systems.

Hamad Port, Qatar

ArchTam was appointed by the Government of Qatar to provide programme management, design review, procurement, and construction management services for Hamad Port. The oil and gas trade are the backbone of Qatar’s economy and given its proximity to the Persian Gulf, having a modern port was vital for the nation’s economic development, but the existing port was reaching throughput capacity.

The new port will act as a catalyst for the country’s trading industry, better positioning Qatar to benefit from the expected regional growth in container and vehicle carrier traffic as well as general cargo traffic. It will provide a world-class facility and will be constructed at an entirely new inland site occupying 20 square kilometres of undeveloped land.

    <p class="client-quote-text" style="margin-top: 30px";>
        ArchTam, together with New Port Project team and Ministry of Transport, has contributed to the fulfilment of a major Object for the State of Qatar… ArchTam has played an important role in delivering a legacy infrastructure project for the State of Qatar.

        Project Executive Director

        Hamad Port, Qatar

We began our work at Hamad Port by overseeing the masterplanning and design development efforts. Our design facilitated high port productivity and quick turnaround of vessels and trucks, using innovative but proven technologies, such as the use of Automated Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes (ARMGs) and Automated Straddle Carriers in the container yard and transfer areas.

We also designed the terminal to be sustainable, keeping pollution as low as possible by using a combination of electric and hybrid port equipment. The annual capacity of the container terminal after Phases 1A and 1B is now 3.3m TEU, increasing to 5.6m TEU following completion of Phases 2 and 3. The project was awarded the ‘Award of Merit for Airport/Port’ by Engineering News-Record (ENR) in 2019.

Jazan Economic City – port and infrastructure, Saudi Arabia

Our Glasgow based Ports team successfully carried out the masterplan, Front End Engineering Design (FEED), detailed design and preparation of contract tender documents for Jazan Economic City (JEC) Port and Infrastructure Project.

This port will provide facilities for liquid bulk loads, containerised loads and dry bulk loads and will accommodate large and modern vessels in a modern port environment.
