\n The reintroduction of passenger services to the Northumberland Line is a success story for the local region, its residents, and the UK rail industry alike. Find out how we\u2019ve facilitated and fast-tracked its delivery. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

It\u2019s been 60 years since the last passenger train ran between Ashington and Newcastle, two towns in the industrial heartland of North-East England.   In that time, the lack of convenient public transport has had a detrimental impact on people\u2019s lives and the environment, increasing reliance on cars, causing congestion, lengthening journey times, limiting job and leisure opportunities, and contributing, in part, to the region\u2019s economic decline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But no longer. In a momentous moment for the UK rail industry and the people and businesses of the region, passenger services have been reintroduced to the new Northumberland Line<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This innovative and ambitious project has been led by Northumberland County Council (NCC) and is one of the largest capital projects it has ever delivered<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 19, 2025, Blyth Bebside became the fourth station to open on the Northumberland Line, marking another significant milestone in the project\u2019s delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of the scheme\u2019s benefits, Glen Sanderson, Leader of NCC said: \u201cThis is about so much more than a new rail service, it is about opening up new opportunities for the county, the region, and even the country<\/a>\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appointed by NCC via the Perfect Circle joint venture<\/a>, we have played a crucial role on the Northumberland Line, creating strong business cases to secure funding as well as providing multidisciplinary services across stakeholder management, land consents, ground investigations, design, as well as cost and programme management. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is the new Northumberland Line significant? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While the railway between Ashington and Newcastle formerly ran both passenger and freight services, the Beeching cuts<\/a> of the 1960s led to the closure of passenger services.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new passenger services on the Northumberland Line reconnect key towns and communities in south-east Northumberland and the wider Tyne and Wear region. For every \u00a31 invested, the project is expected to generate over \u00a31.50 in economic benefits.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey from Ashington to Newcastle now takes just 35 minutes direct, halving the current bus journey time, significantly improving daily commutes, improving connectivity so people have better access to leisure and employment, and reducing road congestion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crucially, ticket prices have been set at affordable levels<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, by encouraging modal shift from road to rail, the project will contribute to lowering emissions, improving air quality, and supporting regional goals for sustainable development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freight trains can still use the railway alongside the new twice\u2013hourly passenger service \u2013 supporting the economic hubs of Lynemouth Power Station and the Port of Blyth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recognition of the project’s impact, Ashington station was recently crowned Britain\u2019s most life-changing station in this year\u2019s World Cup of Stations<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of this win, Jacqueline Starr, executive chair and CEO of the Rail Delivery Group, told the Northumberland Gazette: \u201cAs we celebrate 200 years of rail history, Ashington shows how investing in stations can transform lives. It\u2019s a brilliant example of how the railway continues to change Britain for the better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
