As lead designer, our strong technical expertise and agile problem-solving to design this project has contributed to and accelerated the country\u2019s low-carbon energy transition.\u202f Zealand\u202f\u202f<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the energy transition well underway, grid-scale batteries are emerging as critical infrastructure, able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archtam.com\/markets\/energy\/transmission-distribution\/microgrids-and-energy-storage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">store renewable energy<\/a> and support grid reliability during peak demand. For Genesis, the Huntly BESS represents the first stage of an ambitious battery rollout, with a vision to grow capacity to 400 MW by 2035.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Huntly BESS will store enough energy to power up to 60,000 homes for two hours during peak demand, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and helping stabilise the grid.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To support this vision, Genesis engaged us as the design partner for the initial 100 MW \/ 200 MWh battery system. The challenge? To move quickly. We were tasked with developing the full concept and detailed design, even before the equipment suppliers had finalised technical specifications.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these complexities, our multidisciplinary team delivered a robust and flexible design package that seamlessly integrated the selected equipment, including 70 Saft battery units, inverters, and the main transformer, into the total functioning system.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A tailored and collaborative approach\u202f<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our scope of work included detailed design and specification across civil and structural works, transmission lines, switchyards, battery systems, control and communications, and grid interface requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This encompassed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"aecom-custom-block block-facts\"\n    style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 40px\">\n\n        <ul class=\"list-style-bullets\">\n                    <li>\n                                    Civil and structural design\u202f                            <\/li>\n                    <li>\n                                    220 kV switchyard and transmission line integration                            <\/li>\n                    <li>\n                                    33 kV switchgear and distribution                            <\/li>\n                    <li>\n                                    Low voltage and battery auxiliary supplies                            <\/li>\n                    <li>\n                                    Control system and DCS design                            <\/li>\n                    <li>\n                                    Electrical protection and fire system monitoring                            <\/li>\n                    <li>\n                                    Transpower grid interface coordination                            <\/li>\n                    <li>\n                                    Installation contractor scope of works and equipment specifications                            <\/li>\n                    <li>\n                                    Factory Acceptance Testing and construction-phase support                            <\/li>\n            <\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Throughout the process, we are working closely with Genesis, Northpower (the installer), and other stakeholders, maintaining regular communication and proactive updates. Our team is also providing oversight during manufacture and construction, ensuring compliance and alignment with evolving technical details.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Global expertise to advance the energy transition in New Zealand\u202f<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With a fast-tracked delivery model, our early-stage design had to anticipate and adapt to future equipment integration.
