\n Learn how a new hospital in Limerick is strengthening regional healthcare through increased capacity and modern facilities. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

As Ireland\u2019s population grows, demand for modern, high-quality healthcare is rising. In response, Bon Secours Health System (BSHS) has made a major investment in a new acute private hospital in Ballysimon, Limerick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new facility \u2013 delivered by BSHS, Ireland\u2019s largest independent healthcare provider \u2013 is the first of its kind to be built in Ireland in nearly two decades and one of the largest healthcare investments ever made in the Midwest. Replacing the long-serving Barringtons Hospital, it provides much-needed capacity and contemporary facilities to support regional care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were appointed to provide quantity surveying services for this landmark project, building on our long and valued relationship with BSHS. Opened in September 2025, with services being phased in over time, the new hospital will eventually care for more than 50,000 patients each year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A transformative investment in Ireland\u2019s healthcare<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bon Secours Limerick is the latest development in a \u20ac300 million national investment by BSHS to expand access to high-quality care across Ireland. <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 23,022 square-metre facility offers both in-patient and out-patient services, and includes 99 overnight beds, 75 day beds, four operating theatres, eight minor procedure rooms, and dedicated departments for radiology, endoscopy and ophthalmology.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hospital also houses ancillary spaces including administration offices, laboratories, a patient pharmacy, an oratory, and a range of staff and patient amenities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the new hospital is home to the first private cardiac catheterisation laboratory in Limerick and the wider Midwest, offering faster access to critical cardiac procedures. Alongside these services, the hospital provides a broad range of specialties, including cardiology, respiratory medicine, and advanced diagnostic imaging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together, these facilities and services mark a step change in how care is delivered in the Midwest \u2013 improving access to diagnostics and surgery, supporting earlier intervention, and helping to relieve pressure on the public health system.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bon Secours Limerick also\u00a0establishes\u00a0a strong foundation\u00a0for closer collaboration between public and private providers, contributing to a more integrated and resilient model of care for the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sustainability built in\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sustainability is central to the hospital\u2019s design. The building features green roofs that support biodiversity and improve insulation to help cut energy demand.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air-to-water heat pumps provide low-carbon heating and cooling, supported by high-performing insulation and energy-efficient LED lighting throughout.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, the hospital uses electric-only cooking systems and includes infrastructure for electric vehicle (EV) charging, alongside cyclist facilities and convenient access to public transport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Efficient delivery through modern construction methods\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

To meet ambitious programme goals and maintain the highest clinical quality standards, Bon Secours Limerick was constructed using a combination of traditional and modern, offsite methods.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key components include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • 99\u00a0modular bathroom pods,\u00a0<\/strong>which streamlined\u00a0installation and ensured\u00a0consistent quality across rooms.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    • Steel framing systems (SFS infill panels)<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0rapid enclosure and weatherproofing\u00a0of the building.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
        \n
      • Modern partitioning and ceiling systems<\/strong>\u00a0to enhance acoustic and fire performance.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
          \n
        • Terracotta rainscreen cladding and aluminum curtain walls<\/strong>,\u00a0which provide\u00a0thermal efficiency and durability.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          This hybrid approach not only reduced disruption on site but also improved quality control and helped ensure the hospital was delivered on time and to a high standard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
