The IPE is made up of renowned architects, economists, planners and developers who advise URA on international best practices. The experts also provided feedback on planning and urban design issues raised by URA and identified ways to promote innovative architecture and urban design in Singapore. I highlighted to government ministers the need to plan dynamically and flexibly in the face of rapidly advancing technology and to further plan the use of underground space. These strategic inputs are crucial in guiding planning concepts for Singapore in the next 40-50 years, as it explores opportunities and tackles challenges in city planning, such as the transportation of people and goods with driverless vehicles and the psychology of living in a developed urban environment. I also presented to a capacity attendance at a public lecture held in conjunction with the IPE meeting, citing examples of occupied underground space in other cities around the world. This was followed in the evening by a question-and-answer working session with the Underground Space Team of URA. I also recently gave discussed these themes in a talk titled ‘Subterranean Sydney’ at the Vivid Sydney festival.
