I’ve recently returned from MontrĂ©al where the city pretty much runs on bikes and there is such a different feeling (positive) between car drivers and pedestrians and cyclists. Common courtesy and respect between all parties is the first thing to making the various modes of travel work.
cheers Chris

Sorry to hear about such tragedies.

As a commuting cyclist, I think you’re spot on noting that the renegade, red-light running, sidewalk-riding cyclists are equally problematic.

But it’s really hard to be positive when motorists have either abused or carelessly nearly killed or injured you for over 30 years just because we are using a different mode of transport to them today. The worse examples are when people like that taxi passenger blame the cyclist for the event, don’t know the road rules and clearly have a negative attitude to cyclists. If someone admits their mistakes and are sorry then usually I’ll get over it pretty quick and get on with life.

I disagree you on “… Australia will never be like Copenhagen or Amsterdam.” Anything is possible and we never know what the future holds. It’s just a lot harder to correct the errors of the past. Australia didn’t start off as car-dependent suburbia but took over 50 years to develop in some areas. Inner city areas of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane were developed before the car era and infill development & cultural change can & are slowly leading to improve the current situation. If we could get rid of on-street parking, reduce pavement widths and turn streets into linear parks with a narrow slow speed roadway instead, it could become really nice.

“Australia may never be a cycling utopia, …” Read the history of cycling in Australia. Melbourne used to be one of the main cycling centres in the world long before Copenhagen was even heard of. Unfortunately then the car came along.

On the positive side, I do often acknowledge considerate driving with a wave in some situations even through really they are just following the rules. But it doesn’t cost anything so why not.
