A lot of people will read and learn from this post. Leadership should be less about gender and more about capability. It is important that we can see both men and woman at the head of the table. As senior female leaders its important that we can demonstrate both gender are equally capable without taking away from either. This is a balance and one that we should be proud to rise to every day.

One of my earliest mentors (a man) taught me that you not only sit at the table but also speak up, add value, and be heard. Otherwise, why are you in the meeting or at the table at all? I still find speaking first too risky and stressful, but I like summing up and paraphrasing. Taking the minutes is also a position of influence.

I believe the way we share our life experience and define our journey can create idea paths for others to follow. This was the lift I needed to set me in the direction I’m being pulled. I read this story, the morning after “I leapt” out of my own comfort zone. Last night I attended a monthly meeting for our local chapter of the General Federation Women’s Clubs (GFWC). I went on my own without sponsor, and although it was a bit overwhelming; I was warmly welcomed with open arms. It gave me this great sense of personal achievement; just for following through. Writing this thank you to you, is my own confirmation of my planned commitment.

I just loved reading your story.
My Mother did the same thing with my boys, but it was with Billabong stock and surf gear.
Thank you for sharing.

I want my daughter, who’ll receive a Communications BA in May, to see this.

I enjoyed reading your article. What you describe applies equally to many men who are reserved and have been brought up to not sing their own praises. This problem is not just a gender problem, men and women need to be encouraged to be more confident in themselves. Alan
